Referente a Obra - CALANGO LUMBRERA

In 2014, 19 diplomats were accepted into the internationally renowned Brazilian diplomatic academy, Instituto Rio Branco. To commemorate their achievement, the Brazilian artist Solange Ribeiro decided to paint a picture, the Calango Lumbrera. Continuing a tradition started by the previous class of diplomats, the class of 2014 chose as their mascot a lizard (calango) that inhabits the Brazilian savanna (cerrado). For those who are not very familiar with Brazilian geography, Instituto Rio Branco is located in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, which lies in the middle of that biome. And why “lumbrera”? Because not only does it mean enlightened in Spanish and therefore describes the brilliant minds that have always been part of the Brazilian diplomatic corps, but also the word appeared in a Spanish vocabulary question in the entrance exam taken by the class of 2014. That is why the class of 2014 of the Brazilian diplomatic academy named the student guide that they prepared for future candidates the Calango Lumbrera; hence, Solange Ribeiro decided to depict an enlightened lizard, filled with the characteristic landmarks of Brasilia’s modernist architecture. The 19 crystals studded on the painting represent each one of the new stars in the constellation called the Brazilian foreign service.
